Understanding Food Noise

What is Food Noise?

Food noise is the constant mental chatter around food – thinking about what to eat, when to eat next, or craving specific foods even when you're not physically hungry. It's often less about the body, and more about stress, habits, and emotions.

When stress, boredom, anxiety, or overwhelm kick in, the brain looks for a quick way to shift how you feel. Food is fast, easy, and reliable – it offers short-term relief, even when the body doesn't need fuel.

In that moment, it works.

But the relief doesn't last. This is where the loop forms:

eat to relieve the feeling → feel temporary relief → realise you weren't hungry → the feeling comes back → repeat.

Over time, this loop can actually add to the stress. Eating without hunger often brings frustration or guilt – putting more pressure on a state that was already difficult.

Physical hunger is different. It builds gradually, is felt in the body, and is satisfied by eating. Food noise is driven by the mind – it can show up suddenly, feel urgent, and persist even after eating, because it's not really about food.

Coaching helps you step out of this loop by identifying what's actually driving the urge to eat. When you address the stress and emotions underneath – not just the food – the noise starts to settle. And that's where things begin to feel calmer, clearer, and more like you.
